Our History

On April 24, 1874, the Town of Detroit (later Detroit Lakes) appointed a committee with a simple but lasting mission: find land for a community cemetery. The committee acted quickly, selecting 10 acres and beginning the work of creating a place of rest for the town's residents.

Burials began that same year, but the community soon recognized that a dedicated organization was needed to care for the grounds properly. In the spring of 1882, civic leaders stepped up and formally established the Oak Grove Cemetery Association. By May of that year, members gathered for the first annual meeting, elected seven trustees, and put the association's first officers in place. Oak Grove Cemetery was officially born.

 

Who We Are

For nearly 150 years, a dedicated team of volunteer trustees have kept Oak Grove running with care and pride. Oak Grove Cemetery Association is a nonprofit organization existing for one purpose — to preserve, maintain, and improve this cherished final resting place for the people of Detroit Lakes and the surrounding community.

Oak Grove welcomes both traditional burials and cremation interments. One vault internment or two cremation inurnments may be placed on a single lot, offering flexible and affordable options for families.
